CDC Cover-up of the danger of childhood vaccines
When a study revealed that mercury in childhood vaccines may have caused autism in thousands of kids, the government rushed to conceal the data - and to prevent parents from suing drug companies for their role in the epidemic. Thimerosal is (or has been) a mercury-based (ethylmercury) preservative in the vaccines.
The federal officials and industry representatives had assembled to discuss a disturbing new study that raised alarming questions about the safety of a host of common childhood vaccines administered to infants and young children. According to a CDC epidemiologist named Tom Verstraeten, who had analyzed the agency's massive database containing the medical records of 100,000 children, a mercury-based preservative in the vaccines - thimerosal - appeared to be responsible for a dramatic increase in autism and a host of other neurological disorders among children.
The new study cited a staggering number of earlier studies that indicate a link between thimerosal and speech delays, attention-deficit disorder, hyperactivity and autism. Even for scientists and doctors accustomed to confronting issues of life and death, the findings were frightening. Since 1991, when the CDC and the FDA had recommended that three additional vaccines laced with the preservative be given to extremely young infants. As the number of vaccines increased, the rate of autism among children exploded. The estimated number of cases of autism had increased fifteenfold, from one in every 2,500 children to one in 166 children.
More than 500,000 kids currently suffer from autism (the Thimerosal Generation - those born between 1989 and 2003) and pediatricians diagnose more than 40,000 new cases every year. The disease was unknown until 1943, when it was identified and diagnosed among 11 children born in the months after thimerosal was first added to baby vaccines in 1931. The are not many 20 year old autistics.
In 1977, a Russian study found that adults exposed to much lower concentrations of ethylmercury than those given to American children still suffered brain damage years later. Russia banned thimerosal from children's vaccines 20 years ago, and Denmark, Austria, Japan, Great Britain and all the Scandinavian countries have since followed suit.
Vaccine manufacturers had already begun to phase thimerosal out of injections given to American infants - but they continued to sell off their mercury-based supplies of vaccines until last year. The CDC and FDA gave them a hand, buying up the tainted vaccines for export to developing countries and allowing drug companies to continue using the preservative in some American vaccines - including several pediatric flu shots as well as tetanus boosters routinely given to 11-year-olds.
Rather than conduct more studies to test the link to autism and other forms of brain damage, the CDC placed politics over science. The agency turned its database on childhood vaccines - which had been developed largely at taxpayer expense - over to a private agency, America's Health Insurance Plans, ensuring that it could not be used for additional research. It also instructed the Institute of Medicine, an advisory organization that is part of the National Academy of Sciences, to produce a study debunking the link between thimerosal and brain disorders.
In June 2000, a group of top government scientists and health officials gathered for a meeting convened by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Instead of taking immediate steps to alert the public and rid the vaccine supply of thimerosal, the officials and executives at Simpsonwood spent most of the next two days discussing how to cover up the damaging data. According to transcripts obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, many at the meeting were concerned about how the damaging revelations about thimerosal would affect the vaccine industry's bottom line.
The drug companies are also getting help from powerful lawmakers in Washington. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, who has received $873,000 in contributions from the pharmaceutical industry, has been working to immunize vaccine makers from liability in 4,200 lawsuits that have been filed by the parents of injured children. On five separate occasions, Frist has tried to seal all of the government's vaccine-related documents and shield Eli Lilly, the developer of thimerosal, from subpoenas.
Even many conservatives are shocked by the government's effort to cover up the dangers of thimerosal. Rep. Dan Burton, a Republican from Indiana stated, "The FDA and other public-health agencies failed to act, the committee added, out of "institutional malfeasance for self protection" and "misplaced protectionism of the pharmaceutical industry."
If, as the evidence suggests, our public-health authorities knowingly allowed the pharmaceutical industry to poison an entire generation of American children, their actions arguably constitute one of the biggest scandals in the annals of American medicine. "The CDC is guilty of incompetence and gross negligence," says Mark Blaxill, vice president of Safe Minds, a nonprofit organization concerned about the role of mercury in medicines. "The damage caused by vaccine exposure is massive. It's bigger than asbestos, bigger than tobacco, bigger than anything you've ever seen." It's hard to calculate the damage to our country - and to the international efforts to eradicate epidemic diseases - if Third World nations come to believe that America's most heralded foreign-aid initiative is poisoning their children.

The truth is that the Downing Street Memo is a reminder of how poorly the media served the public before the war--which might explain why the major news media has not been heard on the subject until recently.
The case for the politicization of intelligence is not difficult to make--it merely involves citing evidence the media ignored at the time. In its March 3, 2003 issue, Newsweek reported what should have been a bombshell: The star defector who supplied some of the most significant information about Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction had told investigators that those weapons no longer existed.Iraq defector Hussein Kamel--Saddam Hussein's son-in-law, who ran Iraq's unconventional weapons programs--was debriefed in 1995 about the status of those programs. Some of what Kamel said to the weapons inspectors would become very familiar: 30,000 liters of anthrax had been produced by the Iraqi regime, for example, and four tons of the VX nerve agent. These specific quantities were cited repeatedly by White House officials to make the case for war, and were staples of media coverage in the run-up to war.But Kamel told the inspectors something else: that Iraq had destroyed these stockpiles soon after the Gulf War. "All weapons-- biological, chemical, missile, nuclear-- were destroyed," Kamel told the inspectors.At the time, FAIR pointed out (2/27/03) that White House officials were misleading the public by selectively citing the Kamel interview: "Their repeated citations of his testimony--without revealing that he also said the weapons no longer exist--suggests that the administration might be withholding critical evidence."Despite their obvious importance, the Kamel revelations were barely mentioned in the mainstream media. US lied to Britain over use of napalm in Iraq war
The 30 MK77 firebombs were used by the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force in the invasion of Iraq between 31 March and 2 April 2003. They were used against military targets "away from civilian targets" and avoids breaching the 1980 Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW), which permits their use only against military targets.Britain, which has no stockpiles of the weapons, ratified the convention, but the US did not.
The US authorities only admitted the use of the weapons after the evidence from reporters had become irrefutable.

Myanmar: Arrests of political activists increase
Since February 2005, the authorities have arrested at least five opposition members of parliament elected in the 1990 elections. The results of those elections have never been acknowledged by the Burmese authorities, the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC). At least ten politicians from the Shan ethnic nationality were arrested in February 2005, including Khun Htun Oo, chairman of the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy party.There are at least 1,350 political prisoners in Myanmar.

AU Urges House Not To Retreat in Combating Religious Bias at Air Force Academy
Americans United for Separation of Church and State today urged the House of Representatives not to weaken a provision in a defense appropriations bill that requires corrective action on religious bias at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Last week, U.S. Rep. David Obey (D-Wisc.) inserted an amendment to the spending bill criticizing "coercive and abusive religious proselytizing" at the Academy and requiring the Air Force to submit a plan to Congress to correct the problems.

Farm workers exposed to toxins in California!
Last week, 23 farm workers were rushed to the hospital for pesticide poisoning near Arvin, California. They were seriously exposed to pesticides Thursday when chemicalsbeing sprayed by an application company in a neighboring field drifted into the nearby vineyard where the grape workers were laboring. Four women went into convulsions and all 23 workers were admitted to hospitals.

CAFTA
A decade ago, the U.S. Congress traded away our economic future with back-room deals and passed the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Since then over 700,000 jobs have been lost in the U.S. and 8 million more people in Mexico are living in poverty. The proposed Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) will extend this nightmare to 6 more nations.
CAFTA is another flawed trade deal that will sell out America's jobs--and it will do nothing to lift Central American and Dominican workers out of poverty.
CAFTA is just like the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)--a failure. NAFTA has cost the United States close to 1 million real and potential jobs and has not reduced poverty or inequality in Mexico.
Flawed trade deals like CAFTA have devastated our communities as companies close or export their jobs and millions of skilled workers cannot find jobs that pay living wages. Right now we are losing jobs because of bad trade deals in every sector that is open to trade competition, from lumber and aerospace to clothing. CAFTA won't help--CAFTA will make it worse.

House Rejects Effort to Fund UNFPA!
This week, on a largely party-line vote, the U.S. House yesterday blocked a measure that would have restored U.S. funding for UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund.
UNFPA works in nearly 150 of the worlds poorest countries to provide women with desperately needed family planning and reproductive health services.

The Patriot Act needs to be reformed, not expanded. Section 215 allows the FBI to seize a vast array of sensitive personal information and belongings - including medical, library and business records using secret intelligence tools that do not require individual criminal activity and that do not require specific facts connecting these records to terrorism, to a terrorist, or to a spy.
The SAFE Act would stop the Patriot Act's infringement on free speech. The Patriot Act created a new and overly expansive definition of "domestic terrorism" that could apply to certain protesters, including abortion demonstrators or anti-war protesters. The government should not be able to label protesters as "terrorists" without proper justification. The SAFE Act would link this power to specific terrorism crimes to reduce that risk.
In 2003, for the first time in history, the American government used more secret intelligence wiretaps than criminal wiretaps. Secret intelligence wiretaps are much easier for law enforcement to obtain and do not have the same amount of protection against abuse compared to criminal wiretaps. To combat this trend toward secret eavesdropping and spying, the SAFE Act would include new reporting requirements. This is critical to ensuring that the government does not abuse its counter-terrorism powers.
The Patriot Act is an attack on fundamental American values. It needs to be fixed. The Constitution and its Bill of Rights emphasize the need for checks and balances on government agents and limits to their power. The Patriot Act rolled back key judicial oversight and gave law enforcement significant new powers that go beyond the war on terrorism.

The US Constitution was a battle between the Federalists (Hamilton, Adams, etc) who wanted an oligarch and the anti-federalists (Jefferson, Franklin, etc). In order to vote at that time you have to own property or have an estate, you had to be male and you had to be white. Hamilton wanted a king and royal family which Washington refuted. Thom Hartman's book What Would Jefferson Do, has a lot of these answers. He explains how the corporations were able to get Personal rights using the 19th amendment 30 years before the women were allowed to vote. I am also interested in the work that Supreme Court Justice Brandeis did when the country was in the same position we are in now. He said "You can have a democracy or you can have all the wealth in the hands of the few. You cannot have both." The U N statistic show that There is a greater disparity between the rich and the poor in the United States than in any other country. We have become a "banana republic"

The Patriot Act is an attack on fundamental American values. It needs to be fixed. The Constitution and its Bill of Rights emphasize the need for checks and balances on government agents and limits to their power. The Patriot Act rolled back key judicial oversight and gave law enforcement significant new powers that go beyond the war on terrorism.

The US Constitution was a battle between the Federalists (Hamilton, Adams, etc) who wanted an oligarch and the anti-federalists (Jefferson, Franklin, etc). In order to vote at that time you have to own property or have an estate, you had to be male and you had to be white. Hamilton wanted a king and royal family which Washington refuted. Thom Hartman's book What Would Jefferson Do, has a lot of these answers. He explains how the corporations were able to get Personal rights using the 19th amendment 30 years before the women were allowed to vote. I am also interested in the work that Supreme Court Justice Brandeis did when the country was in the same position we are in now. He said "You can have a democracy or you can have all the wealth in the hands of the few. You cannot have both." The U N statistic show that There is a greater disparity between the rich and the poor in the United States than in any other country. We have become a "banana republic"
