Will Pitt FYI: Experts See Military Draft as Inevitable
http://forum.truthout.org/blog/story/2005/2/18/9166/09308
On February 10, a jury in New York City convicted longtime activist attorney Lynne Stewart of conspiracy, providing material support to terrorists, defrauding the government and making false statements.
But, as David Cole comments in the latest issue of The Nation, rather than making us safer, this conviction "illustrates how out of hand things have gotten in the 'war on terrorism.'" As Cole adds, "to inflate its successes in ferreting out terrorism, the Justice Department turned an administrative infraction into a terrorism conviction that, unless reversed, will likely send Stewart to prisonfor the rest of her life."
Read Cole's editorial for more on why Stewart's conviction is so unjust andpolitically-motivated.

Will Pitt FYI: Find the Cost of Freedom
http://forum.truthout.org/blog/story/2005/2/17/85035/7270
The Jeff Gannon/James Guckert affair is still buzzing around the internet. But even though the scandal exposed a right-wing journalist operating undermisleading cover, David Corn raises a cautionary note or two in Capital Games.
http://www.thenation.com/capitalgames/index.mhtml?bid=3&pid=2196
As importantly, as Katrina vanden Heuvel says in Editor's Cut, it is worth remembering that how the White House operated in the Gannon scandal is but the latest round in the Bush Administration's assault on the freedom of the press. http://www.thenation.com/capitalgames/index.mhtml?bid=3&pid=2196
Many of the attacks on University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill also raise basic questions about our country's commitment to ideals like true freedom of expression. John Nichols explores these issues in his Online Beat, which applauds UW-Whitewater chancellor Jack Miller for keeping his school's speaking engagement with the controversial writer and teacher.
