Bush's Iraq Fantasy
On Tuesday George Bush praised the Iraqi draft constitution hammered out by
Shiites and Kurds without Sunni involvement. He called it an "amazing event."
But as others have widely noted, Iraqi secular leaders have warned that this
constitution could lead to domination of Iraq by Shiite Islamic clerics.
Moreover, with the drafting of the document being done largely behind closed
doors, many feel a lack of "ownership."

And, as Iraq burns, Bush keeps riding his bike in Crawford. "He mouths the same
platitudes about freedom and democracy he was using three years ago," writes
Katrina vanden Heuvel in Editor's Cut. "And he cross-trains. The President
doesn't just need a plan to get us out of Iraq; he needs an intervention to get
him back to planet Earth." http://www.thenation.com/blogs/edcut?bid=7&pid=15969
In fact, as John Nichols says, "Bush achieved a leisure landmark this month. The
previous record for presidential slacking-off was 335 days. On August 18, Bush
surpassed that number of days off, and he still has more than three years left
in his second term." http://www.thenation.com/blogs/thebeat?bid=1&pid=16460

Gumbel's book takes a tough look at electoral democracy in the US and blames the
defects of today's electoral system on a corrupted political environment created
by both major parties, and on a large number of state and county election
officials more interested in appearances than in the integrity of the democratic
process. Click below for info and to order copies online.
