Remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki 60 years later--FCNL

August 6 and 9 this year marks the 60th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Help your community to remember the hundreds of thousands of civilians who lost their lives in the bombings and to say "never again." Quaker meetings and churches, FCNL contacts, and peace groups all over the country are putting together vigils and public demonstrations.

Organize or join an event in your community.

Download and distribute the new FCNL flyer from our web page at: www.fcnl.org/nuclear

Include information about your local events on the FCNL flyer, copy and distribute.

Remembering the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is a way to make clear that such weapons cannot serve any reasonable purpose in society.

Yet, 60 years later, the U.S. government is still considering developing new nuclear weapons, including a "bunker buster" nuclear bomb that would be 70 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb.

Under current U.S. policy, nuclear weapons are still considered a viable way of projecting U.S. military power and dealing with our "enemies."

You can make a difference by saying "never again."

So far this year, tens of thousands of people have contacted their members of Congress to oppose funding for the "bunker buster" nuclear weapon. These emails and letters are having an effect.

This spring the House of Representatives rejected the idea of developing new nuclear weapons. While the Senate supported such funding, it did so with fewer votes than in previous years. The issue will be resolved in a House-Senate conference committee in September. Ultimately, all funds may be cut.

Meet your representative and senators in August: Members of Congress will be on August recess July 30 through September 5.

Attend local public forums or organize a delegation to meet with your legislators and discuss your concerns about U.S. nuclear weapons policies. Make your appointments now to ensure the availability of your member of Congress.
