Sham Energy Bill Up for a Vote in the U.S. House of Representatives
As soon as next week, the House of Representatives will vote on a comprehensive energy bill that would seriously harm the environment and weaken public health protections. Unfortunately, the bill currently contains provisions that would open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and other pristine wilderness to oil and gas drilling, and weaken protections for the air we breathe and the water we drink.
What's more, the Energy Department found that the bill would do nothing to reduce gasoline prices. The bill doesn't improve energy efficiency, save oil or advance clean, renewable energy sources. It would, however, provide billions of taxpayer dollars to oil, coal and nuclear industries -- even though energy companies are currently making record-breaking profits. The bill would even increase the risk of nuclear proliferation and nuclear waste contamination by promoting new development of nuclear power.
House leaders have promised a final vote on the bill before the end of May.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Go to the DEN Action Center at http://www.denaction.org and send a message urging your representative to vote against the current House energy bill and to support amendments to fix it. The vote may come up as early as the week of APRIL 18, so please send your message today. Thanks for helping to stop an environmentally irresponsible energy bill.
