From Senator Patty Murray

I wrote Seantor Murray and urged her to vote NO on the Rice confirmation. This is her response to me.
My feelings is that we need to "just say no" to whatever is proposed or endorsed by this administration. They have the numbers to push anything through congress simply on a partisan vote. I think that we need to let BushCo know that there is a true "opposition" party and that we are willing to vote that way...................Scott

Dear Mr. Brineman:

Thank you for contacting me with regard to the confirmation of Condoleezza Rice as the next United States Secretary of State. I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.

As you may know, the Senate recently voted to confirm Dr. Rice to be our next Secretary of State. Although I voted in favor of Dr. Rice’s nomination, my vote does not excuse her from the responsibility she bears for her work as NationalSecurity Advisor, particularly the Administration’s woefully inadequate planning for Iraq.

Despite my concerns, I voted to confirm Dr. Rice because I generally believe a president should have a Cabinet of his choosing. I do take my responsibility to provide “advice and consent” very seriously and consider each nominee individually. I hope that Dr. Rice will reflect on the valid concerns raised during her confirmation hearing and will adopt a more open style that welcomes all views, particularly those that she and the President do not already hold.

The Secretary of State is a very important cabinet position to our state with our diverse global interests that effect all of Washington. I will work closely with Dr. Rice to see that the issues raised in her confirmation process are not forgotten. And I will work with her to advance Washington state's many interests whether it be cultural ties to Asia, Washington state residents who serve in the Foreign Service or Peace Corps, or the many trade issues that effect our state's economy.

I appreciate and value your views on Dr. Rice. The issues you raised are important both to her work as the Secretary of State and particularly to the Congress, as we have a serious obligation to represent the American people on important foreign policy and national security matters.

Thank you again for contacting me.

Sincerely,
Patty Murray
United States Senator
